The 2024 Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC) is buzzing with major developments in energy and technology, attracting over 184,000 participants from 164 countries. Held from November 4 to 7, it’s the largest energy conference worldwide and a prime stage for discussing energy transition, particularly how artificial intelligence (AI) and new technologies can enhance energy efficiency. This year, a dedicated "AI Zone" featuring companies like Microsoft and Accenture showcases innovations for sustainable energy management, while leaders highlight AI as transformative for the industry.

A central theme is the delicate balance between renewable and traditional energy resources, with UAE officials stressing the ongoing importance of oil despite the rapid growth in renewables. ADNOC (the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) has unveiled projects focused on sustainability, including offshore electrification and waste heat recovery to cut emissions by up to 50%.

There’s also some industry intrigue with geopolitical tensions influencing conversations on global energy security and market dynamics. With AI and sustainability efforts driving much of the excitement, the conference has become a networking hotspot for energy and tech insiders seeking the latest insights into the sector's future.

At ADIPEC 2024, ADNOC and the UAE-based technology firm 44.01 announced plans to scale up their carbon-to-rock initiative, which is being seen as a major step toward achieving sustainability in the UAE. This partnership, located in Fujairah, uses mineralization technology to convert CO2 into a stable, rock-like mineral. The process involves capturing CO2, dissolving it in seawater, and then injecting it into peridotite rock formations, where it permanently mineralizes within the earth. This approach makes carbon capture more secure by preventing CO2 from escaping back into the atmosphere.

The pilot project, which mineralized 10 tonnes of CO2 within 100 days, demonstrated the potential for large-scale application. Moving forward, the first phase of the expanded project aims to mineralize over 300 tonnes of CO2, with the ultimate goal of reaching a capacity of 10 million tonnes annually by 2030. ADNOC’s efforts align with its broader carbon management strategy, aimed at significantly reducing emissions across the UAE's industries.

This initiative also highlights the UAE's use of advanced technologies and renewable energy sources to address climate change and reduce carbon footprints in preparation for hosting COP28, reflecting the country’s commitment to global climate goals. The ADIPEC platform has showcased other similar innovations in sustainability, emphasizing the UAE's role as a regional leader in green transformation.

This approach to carbon capture is gaining international recognition, with 44.01’s technology recently making it to the top 20 finalists of the Carbon Removal XPRIZE, further underscoring its potential in global carbon reduction efforts.
